Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Velacompress compresses your images inside your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to a server, and you can confirm it in your browser’s network tab. Your files never leave your machine.
How is Velacompress different from TinyPNG?
TinyPNG uploads your images to its servers to compress them, and its free tier limits how many you can process. Velacompress runs entirely in your browser, so there is no upload and no per-batch limit on desktop. You pay once instead of subscribing.
How is it different from Squoosh?
Squoosh also runs locally, which is great, but it is built around compressing one image at a time. Velacompress is built for batches — drag in a folder and process everything in one pass.
Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Yes. Velacompress converts HEIC — the default format on iPhone — to JPG, WebP, or AVIF, entirely in your browser. You can convert a whole folder at once, and nothing is uploaded. It’s a good way to make your iPhone photos openable on Windows or on any site that rejects HEIC, without sending them to a server.
What input formats are supported?
You can bring in JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and HEIC files.
What output formats can I export?
WebP, JPEG, and AVIF. AVIF export is included with the Pro license.
Does Velacompress keep metadata (location, camera, date taken)?
No. Every image Velacompress re-encodes comes out without metadata: GPS location, camera model and date taken are removed, and the orientation is applied to the image itself so it still displays the right way up. One exception: when a file is already so well compressed that re-encoding it in the same format would not make it smaller, the original is kept unchanged, metadata included.
Is there a file size or batch limit?
The free version processes up to 10 images per batch. The Pro license removes that limit: on desktop Chrome or Edge, the practical ceiling is your machine’s memory. In Firefox, Safari and on mobile, batches are capped at 50 images or 150 MB to prevent crashes.
How much does it cost?
A one-time payment of US$30. No subscription and no recurring fees.
What does "lifetime license" mean?
Your license is valid for the commercial lifetime of the product — that is, for as long as Velacompress is commercially operated. It is a one-time purchase, not a time-limited trial.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Velacompress runs in your browser. There is nothing to download or install.
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome and Edge give the full experience, including writing compressed files straight back to a folder. Firefox and Safari are supported too; on those, results are delivered as a ZIP archive.
Can I use it offline?
Not yet. Velacompress needs a connection to load. Once the page is open, your images are processed on your device and never uploaded, but there is no installable offline mode yet.
What happens after I buy?
You receive a license key by email within about a minute. Paste it into the unlock page, and the Pro features activate immediately.
Do you offer refunds?
Your license key is delivered immediately, and at checkout you agree that the right of withdrawal ends once it is delivered, so purchases are final after delivery. Exception: if Velacompress does not work on your setup because of a defect we cannot resolve, contact us within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. See the Terms of Service for details.
